The Mountain View High School Band was established in the fall of 2000. Students from the program have been regularly selected to the Colorado All-State Bands and All-State Orchestras as well as other honor ensembles. In addition, numerous students have continued on to become music majors. The Mountain View Lion Pride Marching Band was the 3A State Champion in 2002.

Our Bands

Concert Band
Open to all wind and percussion students. We perform at all of the scheduled concerts and one festival in the spring. Members of the Concert Band are also members of the Lion Pride Marching Band.

Symphonic Band
Open to wind and percussion students by audition only. We perform at all of the scheduled concerts as well as multiple festivals and community events. Members of the Symphonic Band are also members of the Lion Pride Marching Band.

Lion Pride Marching Band
A
ll students registered for Concert or Symphonic Band are also members of the Lion Pride Marching Band. We perform at all home football games in addition to various community events, parades, and field shows.

Jazz Ensemble
Open to all students interested in jazz. Students must also be concurrently enrolled in another band or orchestra at Mountain View. Jazz Ensemble performs at all of the scheduled concerts as well as the Mountain View Jazz Swing Dance, various community events, and the UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival.

All State Band

Acceptance into the Colorado All State Band is the highest honor that a junior or senior band student could receive. More information about the festival, auditions and procedures is below.

Northern Colorado Honor Band

The Northern Colorado Honor Band is a collaboration between the Band programs of the Poudre School District, Thompson School District, Windsor School District, as well as area Charter Schools. Since it's inception, the Northern Colorado Honor Band has strived to feature some of the finest musicians/conductors/educations in our profession, and has quickly become a premiere honor band event.

The Band Leadership Team is comprised of outstanding students who are dedicated to supporting the goals of the MVHS Bands and the directors.

Mr. Toews

Picture
Mr. Toews is Director of Bands and Orchestras at Mountain View High School. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in K-12 Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado. While at UNC, Mr. Toews was awarded the Departmental Scholar Award and was selected for membership in Pi Kappa Lambda (the National Music Honor Society). He was selected as the 2002-03 Mountain View High School Teacher of the Year, the 2013-14 Thompson Education Foundation Secondary Teacher of the Year, and the 2021-22 Thompson Education Foundation Educator of the Year. In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. Toews is the chairman of the Performing and Visual Arts Department at Mountain View and is the EC-12 Curriculum Coordinator for the Thompson School District. He has served as the District 3 Representative, Chair-Elect, and Chair of the Instrumental Music Council for the Colorado Music Educator's Association. Additionally, he has served on the executive board for All-State Orchestra (Northern Governor, Chair-Elect, and Chair) as well as the All-State Band Steering Committee. He is a member of ASBDA, ASTA, CBA, CMEA, and Phi Beta Mu. He is a member of the Exquisite Brass Quintet and lives in Greeley with his wife Shanna and their twins, Alyson and Michael.

Ms. Van Wert

Ms. Van Wert is the director of bands at Bill Reed Middle School and the assistant director of bands at Mountain View High School. She graduated from Colorado State University (go Rams!) in 2018 with a Bachelor's Degree in K-12 Music Education. She also received her Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from Fort Hays State University in 2023. At Bill Reed, she teaches two sections of 6th Grade Band, 7th Grade Band, and 8th Grade Band during the school day. Her teaching responsibilities also include running a before-school jazz band, co-directing school musicals, and teaching an after-school LISA class. At Mountain View, she teaches Concert Band and Intro to Guitar and co-teaches Marching Band. She is also the tech director for the theatre department. In addition to her teaching roles, she serves as the coordinator for both the Thompson School District Middle School Honor Band and the Summer Academy of Music. In 2023, Ms. Van Wert was the recipient of the Thompson School District Crystal Apple Award. She is a member of both CMEA and CBA. Outside of teaching, she enjoys hiking, paddle boarding, baking, and spending time with friends and her husband, Adam.​
